Our History

The very special property called Yamanaka Chalet has been a place of rest and a place to connect with God for many years. SEND International (then called Far Eastern Gospel Crusade) purchased the property in 1949 with the plan of using it for a Bible camp. At the time it had "six well-built Japanese houses," according to an FEGC newsletter. However, the property proved not to be suitable for a Bible camp being a long distance from Tokyo/Yokohama on poor roads. In the early years it was used for summer adult Bible conferences and by FEGC missionaries for vacation. As the cabins began to be rebuilt, church groups and student groups starting coming.

Currently, Cabin #3 is the oldest, which was completed in 1987. The newest is Cabin #7 which was rebuilt twice, the first time in 1972 and again in 2017. When Cabin #1 was rebuilt (1994) with the large dining room, kitchen and second floor meeting room, the Chalet became very popular for church retreats. Now Yamanaka Chalet serves Japanese pastors and missionaries who desire a relaxing place to rest. Guest groups come from churches, college ministries, Christian schools and neighborhood Bible studies. Among the churches are some who worship in Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Korean, as well as English and Japanese. This year we have our first group speaking Mandarin.
